"I, Too, Sing America"(2011) is Cambio's follow up to "Or Does It Explode?" (2009). I, Too, Sing America is Produced by Para La Gente and Gabe Panell. This album fuses Live instrumentation with samples and studio production. Feat the Quilomboarte Collective Bocafloja (Mexico City), Hache St (D.R.), Vnrable (D.R), REALIDAD (D.R.) DJ ETHOS (L.A.) and extended family Velcro (Puerto Rico), and K.R.
This album also features new bay area artist FAVI, Andrea Blunt, Jay Palmer, C.Holiday (Zion I), and long time Cambio collaborator Dede Range.
Like "Or Does It Explode?", "I, Too, Sing America" is taken from the Langston Hughes poem. This poem was his official response, critique, (diss) to Walt Whitmans poem titled "I Hear America Singing".

1. I use the term “eyes on the prize” which is a classic civil rights phrase and title to a famous documentary series during the 1950’s and 60’s. Keeping our eyes on the prize is staying committed to the idea of liberation which can be difficult at times. I’m talking about how hard it is sometimes to stay focused to our movements, our liberation with so many distractions. That sometimes my “eyes wander” which is also a double meaning for when a guy is with his significant other and is checking out another person. In this instance my relationship is the “struggle”, the movement, and i get caught looking or being distracted by something else.

La letra “ojos en el premio” es una frase clásica usada durante el movimiento de los derechos civiles en los Estados Unidos y también se refiere al el titulo de una serie documental que fue famoso en los 1950s y 60s. Mantener los ojos en el premio, en otras palabras, es estar comprometido a la idea de la liberación. Me refiero a lo difícil que es mantener la concentración de nuestros movimientos, nuestra liberación, con las tantas distracciones. También tiene un doble significado para cuando un chico está con su pareja y está mirando a otra persona. En esta cancion yo hablo de mi relación con la "lucha", el movimiento, y de esas distracciones.
2. “invited me to eat at the table, say goodbye to the kitchen” refers to the Langston Hughes poem and is a metaphor for how im stepping out from behind the outer margins, out from the shadows, out from behind the scenes and into my rightful place at the dinner table. We are the people who make society function. Without our labor, our workforce, our backs, the United States wouldn’t function. We not only do we deserve to be at the “dinner tables” but we have the right to full ownership of what we create and produce. Let me emphasize that im not talking being at a dinner table with our oppressors, but having our own with our own people.
2. “Me invitó a comer en la mesa, dile adiós a la cocina” se refiere al poema de Langston Hughes. Tambien es una metáfora de cómo yo salgo de los márgenes exteriores, fuera de las sombras, de detrás de las escenas para llegar al lugar que me corresponde que es en la mesa de cena. Somos las personas que hacen que la sociedad corra. Sin nuestro trabajo y esfuerza los Estados Unidos no funcionaría. No sólo nos merecemos estar en las "mesas de cena", pero tenemos derecho a lo que creamos y producimos. Quisiera efatizar que no estoy hablando de comparir la mesa con nuestros opresores, sino tener derecho a lo que nos pertenece y compariendolo con nuestra gente.
3. “thats a blessing given to us by the melanin” refers to our beautiful brown skin and how we must first embrace our selfs, our body’s before we can embrace anything else. Self Image is something that i've always struggled with and it reflects in my music. It seems Im writing these songs to constantly remind myself that i am beautiful no matter what mainstream society and their ideas of beauty would have me believe.
3. “Eso es una bendición que nos ha dado la melanina” se refiere a nuestra piel morena y bella. Deberiamos querer a si mismos antes de querer cosas. El imagen de mi mismo es algo con que he batallado, y se refleja en mi música. Escribo estas canciones para recordarme constantemente que soy una persona hermosa y no importa las definiciones de belleza que tiene la sociedad.
4. “you don’t need a weatherman to see which way the wind blows” is from a Bob Dylan song. “Subterranean homesick blues”
This was actually one of the last songs added to the album. I like to do concept albums and this songs serves as the prelude of the rest of the music. We had Favi jump on this track last second while she was in the studio doing “something to believe in” for us. Without her vocals this track would not be the same. She blessed the track with a much needed element to emphasize the lyrics and music. She did it on the spot which is amazing to me.
4. “no necesitas un meteorólogo para ver en qué dirección sopla el viento” es the una cancion de Bob Dylan que se llama “Subterranean homesick blues”.
Esta fue una de las últimas canciones añadidas al álbum. Me gusta hacer álbumes conceptuales, y esta cancion sirve como preludio del resto de la música. Nos juntamos con Favi al último momento durante la grabación de “something to believe in”. Sin su canto, la cancion no sería igual. Ella agregó un elemento necesario para enfatizar las letras y la música. Lo hizo en el momento y fue increíble.

1. This beat was co produced by HiFly and Para La Gente group. The production is part Live instrumentation and digital. I originally sang the hook and it sounded horrible so i asked Dede and C.Holiday (singer of Zion I) to lay down the hook. Ive known her since our college days where we met as musicians in different bands and have remained friends ever since.
Esta canción fue coproducida por HiFly y el groupo Para La Gente. La producción es parte instrumental y parte digital. Originalmente canté el coro pero sonaba horrible, así que le pregunté a Dede y a C.Holiday (cantante de Zion I) si lo cantaran por mí. Conocí a Dede en la Universidad. Eramos músicos en bandas diferentes y hemos seguido siendo amigos desde entonces.
2. I wanted to write a Freedom song that had style to it. The Video was shot during our Quilomboarte summer tour in Mexico 2011. I wanted to give back to the fans that show so much support for our movement by including them in the video.

1. This track was inspired by the original song “I need a dollar” by Aloe Blacc. It was also the theme song for the HBO tv show “How to Make It In America”. The show is about some young guys from NYC and their hustle. When I heard the track I immediately knew I wanted to remix it and do some verses for it so I hit up my producer HIFLY who also did “look at me now” and “clap your hands” for the album. He sampled the song and sent me the instrumental right away. I knew from the start I wanted Bocafloja to be on the song to add his perspective to the concept of “i need a dollar”.
1. Esta canción fue inspirada por la canción original: “I Need a Dollar” por Aloe Blacc. También fue el tema musical del show “Cómo triunfar en Estados Unidos" en el canal de HBO. Se trata de unos jóvenes viviendo Nueva York y su lucha para trabajar. Cuando escuché la cancion por primera vez inmediatamente sabía que quería hacer un remix y escribir algunos versos, así que me puse en contacto con mi productor HIFLY quién hizo “look at me now” y “clap your hands” para el álbum. Me envío la muestra de la canción en seguida. Yo sabía desde el principio que quería Bocafloja en la canción para añadir su punto de vista del concepto de "I Need a Dollar”.
2. I start the first verse by saying “getting money i don’t care what you think, I want a house on the hill where the airs clean” which sets the tone for the first verse. When I say Get Money, Im mostly referring to the concept of “Seize the time” (also a title to a book written by Bobby Seale co-founder of the BBP) and is similarly used by the Black Panther Program in relationship with their Survival programs. “i want a house on the hill where the airs clean” is talking about how poor communities and people of color are always the ones who live in areas where pollution is highest (example; superfund sites, toxic waste dump sites, the armpits of city’s etc). People of color face environmental racism and economic apartheid everyday and the lyric is saying of how i just want a simple house on the hill in an area that has Clean Air for my child and I to breath. We have high rates of Cancer, Birth Defects, asthma and other various health issues because of this.
2. Establezco el tono en el primer verso diciendo: “conseguiendo ese dinero homie, no me importa lo que tú piensas, quiero casa en la colina adonde el aire esta limpio”. Cuando digo “conseguiendo dinero”, me refiero al concepto de "Aprovecha el tiempo”, el título de un libro escrito por Bobby Seale, co-fundador de BBP. Está frase tambien se utilizaba por los Black Panthers y sus programas de supervivencia. “Quiero casa en la colina, adonde el aire esta limpio”, está hablando de las comunidades pobres y de las personas de color sin concidencia quienes viven en zonas donde la población es alta y en los sitios de Superfund, áreas de tóxicos. Desafortunadamente tenemos altos índices de cancer, defectos de nacimiento, atsma y otros problemas de salud pora causa de esto. Somos las personas luchando contra el racismo y la segregación económica y en está cancion yo digo que mi hijo y yo tenemos el derecho de tener una casa sencilla una zona limpia.
3. I personally think “got my teeth fixed, now they Dawsons creek White” is the best line ive ever written. Ha! If I had good health insurance (which all working class people deserve) Id get my teeth all fixed and clean. My closest friends know that I always have issues with my insurance and have to leave the county just to get my teeth worked on. Dawsons Creek was a TV show that was the Whitest show that ever existed. The epitome of suburbia's “problems”.
3. Yo creo que "me arregle los dientes, ahora son blancos como Dawson’s Creek " es la mejor línea que me he escrito. ¡Ja! Si yo tuviera un buen seguro médico (algo que todas las personas que trabajan se merecen) me arreglaria yo mis dientes. Mis amigos más cercanos saben que siempre tengo problemas con mi seguro. Hasta tuve que salir del país solo para ver a un dentista. Dawson Creek era un programa de televisión que fue unos de los más blancos que jamás haya existido. Es el epítome de los "problemas" de la suburbia.
4. “Anti-immigrant, boot the pilgrims” is self-explanatory. Just reminding white people that they are the original immigrants to this Continent. “40 acres and a mule” is referring to the land that was promised to former slaves and was never given.

5. The second verse is my attempt to break down the history of how we got to where we are today starting with corporate/religious sponsored expeditions of the Americas to our current economy. (example is the Virginal Company Bank paying for the first pilgrims to come to the Americas to get in on the wealth other people were making) I emphasize how the United States didn’t abolish slavery because they felt it was morally wrong, but instead because it was more cost efficient and more profits would be made from paying a “wage”.
5. En el segundo verso intento de explícar la historia de cómo llegamos aquí. Empiezo con las expediciones a las Américas, que fureon patrocinadas por las empresas y religions, hasta el presente hablando de la economía (Ejemplo de ello es el Banco de Empresa Virginal quien pago a los peregrinos para llegar a las Américas y robar las riquezas de las personas que vivian aqui). Pongo énfasis en cómo los Estados Unidos no abolió la esclavitud por que sentían que era moralmente incorrecto sino porque era más beneficiosse pagarles un "salario".
